Kiln Fusing



   Minimize
Glass fusing, sometimes called warm glass, is the technique of heating pieces of compatible glass in a kiln until they are completely fused. Classes include all glass, materials and tools.

Fusing Fundamentals

Instructor: Linda Kekic
Mondays, 4 weeks, Feb. 20 - Mar. 12 , 1 - 3 p.m. (FG1203)
Prerequisite: No experience necessary. 
Maximum: 12 students

Introduction to kiln-fused glass.  Students will learn to design, shape, assemble and uniquely create a variety of glass art projects including dichroic glass jewelry, a coaster, and a small slumped bowl.  The class can be modified to fit student interests.  Skills covered include cutting, grinding, use of glass saw, inclusions (mica, bronze, copper), glass paints and slumping.  Work with different kinds of glass: dichroic, iridized, stringer, frit, and confetti. Keep a firing log, learn kiln shelf preparation, firing schedules and their effects on glass.  Finish your projects with various findings and wire wrapping. 
 



Fused Dichroic Jewelry

Students in this glass fusing class at West Michigan Glass Art Center will learn a variety of skills: Cutting, design work, grinding, glass saw, glass pens and different kinds of  COE 90 glass (dichroic, iridized, transparent, opaque, stringer, frit and confetti).  Finishing your projects will include use of findings and wire wrapping.  Grow your jewelry making skills in this fun class for adults and teens located right here in Kalamazoo!
 


Sushi Plate

Create a 4” x 9“ fused and slumped sushi plate!  Learn to cut glass and design your art as you are introduced to basic  glass tools and kiln forming techniques.  This fused glass class at West Michigan Glass Art Center is brimming with colorful creative possibilities!

 


Fused Bowl with Inclusions and Dichroic Glass

Prerequisite: No experience necessary

Create a lovely 12” fused glass bowl using several layers of glass.  Design your slumped fused glass bowl with inclusions of metal, powders, frit, glass stringer and dichroic glass.  Design and create a beautiful fused glass bowl for your home or give as a wonderful gift.  Located right here in Southwest Michigan, select this class as one of your fun things to do in Kalamazoo!


Parent and Child Fused Glass Candy Dish

Prerequisite: Age 7 and up, no experience necessary

 This fused glass class is a wonderful experience to share with your children.  Work side by side as you learn to cut glass and layer it on a clear base to create a brightly colored fused glass candy dish.  By adding frit, stringer and confetti your project will be a unique work of art.  You will be notified when the pieces have been fired and are ready for pick-up. What a unique class for adults and children here at West Michigan Class Art Center!


Mother/Daughter Dichroic Pendants

Prerequisite: Age 10 and up, no experience necessary

This class mothers and daughters will introduce you both to the basic principals behind forming glass in the kiln to create beautiful fused glass pendants.  You will be introduced to all of the tools, basic glass cutting and kilnforming theory.  You will be able to incorporate  sparkling dichroic glass to make your pieces really sparkle and shine!   When these one of a kind pieces come out of the kiln a West Michigan Glass Art Center staff member will attach a bail so your piece is ready to wear.  Perfect class for adults and children to work together to create meaningful and beautiful keepsake jewelry.  Creating memories and spending quality time together is priceless!



Parent & Child "Spring" Ornaments

West Michigan Glass Art Center, is thrilled to offer this fused glass class for adults and children.   Both of you will create glass ornaments and family memories.  Using dazzling colored glass you will create holiday and celebration of spring shapes like eggs and flowers.  You will be introduced to the basic principals of cutting glass and kiln forming theory.  You will be notified when the pieces have been fired and are ready to hang up on display and treasure for years to come.  Located right here in Kalamazoo, this class for adults and children is the perfect way to celebrate spring! 



Wine Charms, Vase and Cheese Tray Set

Prerequisite: No experience necessary
$65 members/$80 non-members

 This exciting four-hour introduction to glass fusing and sandblasting will add personality and sparkle to your  party table.  You will be introduced to glass cutting tools and basic
principals behind forming glass in the kiln as you create a 5 “ x 10” cheese tray and 6 to 8 sparkling dichroic wine charms to tag your guest’s glasses.  Finish your experience learning to use the West Michigan Glass Art Center's sandblaster and hand design a wine bottle pre-cut to use as a vase or candle votive.

What a fun fill day!  You will learn so many new skills in this glass fusing and sandblasting class for adults here in Southwest Michigan.   We're the hotspot for fun things to do in Kalamazoo!
