Kiln Casting

Kiln casting refers to the melting of glass inside a mold inside a kiln, allowing for lots of detail, depth of color and beauty.  It contains many of the exciting, artistic elements of fusing and slumping. Glass art classes for adults and teens include all glass, supplies and tools.  Here at West Michigan Glass Art Center located right here in Southwest Michigan, we like to take your imagination to new levels!!  Where else in Kalamazoo can you experience glass art that is SO HOT IT'S COOL!

Kiln Cast Glass Workshop

6 sessions, August 14, 15, 16, 21, 22, 28, noon to 3 p.m. (CA1238)
6 sessions, August 14, 15, 16,  21, 22, 28,  6 - 9 p.m. (CA1239)
Prerequisite: Age 12 and up.  
No experience necessary.
Maximum: 6 students
$275 members/$300 non-members

    Do you like working in glass, but don’t like the heat?  Try Kiln Casting!  The first 2 sessions we will use tools to make 2 sculptures in clay.  The next 3 sessions we will build our mold boxes, pour mold material and  excavate the clay from the molds.  We’ll calculate the volume of glass needed, load our terra cotta pots with clear and colored glass. Then load the kiln and write a program for the casting.  Students can stop by the studio during the firing process to see the pour in action.  The last session we will use cold working equipment to clean and finish our art.  At the end we will have a presentation and soft critique of all the cast glass art.






Kiln Formed Drawer Pulls

Thursdays, May 31 & June 7, 6 - 9 p.m. (CA1240)
Prerequisite:  Age 14 and up, no experience necessary.  
Maximum: 5 students
$80 members/$90 non-members

    Create one-of-a-kind, colorful, round glass drawer pulls and knobs.  Students will use a variety of 90 COE glass elements including frit, stringer, chips and shards to fill small molds that will be kiln fired.  The resulting outcome is four wonderfully individual additions to your home décor.  The second class will be spent learning the proper techniques for cold working and adding finishing hardware to your knobs.  After taking this class you may take the Knob Lab to make up to 24 additional knobs.


Kiln Cast Knob Lab

Prerequisite: Kiln Cast Knobs class or staff approval
$40 members/$50 non-members
    This lab includes four hours of studio rental, one kiln firing cycle, scrap glass, use of  six molds (four knobs each) and fiber paper.  You must supply your own frit and finishing hardware.  You must have staff approval to use the WMGAC cold shop if needed to finish your knobs.
