Our complete state-of-the-art hot shop for glass blowing offers classes for the beginner to the advanced glass artist. Classes are perfect for adults and teens looking for the excitement of learning a new skill or perfecting the craft.  For safety, please wear 100% cotton clothing, long pants and closed-toe shoes.  Located in Southwest Michigan, West Michigan Glass Art Center is the hotspot of fun things to do in Kalamazoo! Classes include all glass, supplies and tools.

Note: If you are interested in a class that won't work with your schedule or is full, many classes can be booked to meet your needs if we have scheduling and instructor availability.  

West Michigan Glass Art Center is located in the heart of beautiful downtown Kalamazoo, Michigan.  We are walking distance from the Radisson hotel and many shops and restaurants in the downtown Kalamazoo area.  Many of our classes are family oriented, perfect for adults, teens and youth.  Come and see the many fun things to do in Kalamazoo!


An Evening with Hot Glass

  

Looking for a beginning class?  Short on time but want to try glassblowing?  Try "An Evening with Hot Glass!"  The glass blowing lessons you receive are one-on-one in our glass blowing studio with an instructor.  You will learn each step of the glass blowing process throughout your class.  So don't worry!   This is a fun and creative first step and you'll be hooked before you know it!

    Enjoy an exciting special evening out and learn the basics of glassblowing at the furnace. Learn to gather glass, add color frit, use traditional glassblowing tools and how to blow out a hot-glass bubble to make a vase or a drinking glass.

One Day Glassblowing Workshop

  Learn the basics of glassblowing at the furnace using traditional tools and blowpipe.  Techniques covered will be how to gather glass, use the marver, blocks and jacks to make and blow a bubble form.  Then make a cup in the morning and a vase or bowl in the afternoon.  Instructor will demonstrate hand blown shapes and students will work on their own projects.  You will choose color frit to decorate your glass.  There will be 1/2 hour break for lunch or dinner.

Perfect class for adults and teens, right here in Southwest Michigan!



Glassblowing I, 8 weeks

Prerequisite: Age 14 & up, no experience necessary.

Maximum: 4 students

   Designed for the beginning glassblower.  This class will offer students instruction in the fundamentals of working and forming molten glass into basic shapes such as cups, bowls and vases.  Students will become familiar with traditional glassblowing equipment and movement in the hot shop.  You will be working with clear glass, color frit and solid color.
This is the perfect class to get a taste for glassblowing and its endless possibilities!  Great workshop for teens and adults!




Intensive Glassblowing I

Six-day intensive, Sun., July 13, 6 - 8 p.m, and Monday, July 14 - Friday July 18,  5 - 9 p.m. (HS1450)
Prerequisite: Age 14 & up, no experience necessary
$400 members/$445 non-members   Maximum: 4 students

   Designed for the beginning glassblower.  Students will produce a variety of  glass objects as they experience the process of glassblowing.  Learning the sequence to produce all the basic shapes,  students can expect to work with clear glass to create cups, vases and bowls.  You will work with color frit the last class.  By the end of this course you should expect to feel comfortable with many of the hand skills required and the teamwork involved in making glass art.




Independent Study in Glassblowing

Prerequisite: Age 14 & up, Glassblowing I, Continuing Glassblowing or equivalent.   Maximum: 4 students
    Continuing glassblowing students will focus on one or two designs.  Learn to design and work in a series.  Students pick a project, (i.e. bowls or sculpture) to repeat and refine their shapes and color techniques. Bring a notebook and a plan.




 



Venetian Twist Cup and Goblet Open Studio

  Join us to practice teamwork while making twist cups and goblets.  This open studio will let everyone share their favorite tips and tricks for using the garage, garage tools, making stems and blown feet for goblets. Bring your own color or practice in clear.  Bring a bag lunch or dinner.

Garden Globe Workshop

  Using traditional glassblower’s tools and techniques, learn to gather at the furnace and blow a bubble.  You will make a hanging hollow glass gazing globe for your garden or to hang on your porch.

Grab your friends and enjoy a day in downtown Kalamazoo!  After creating colorful garden globes in this  glassblowing class, take some time to discover all the downtown Kalamazoo shops and restaurants within walking distance of West Michigan Glass Art Center.





One-Day Garden Art Workshop

Prerequisite:  Age 14 & up, Evening w/Hot Glass, Teen Glassblowing Camp or equivalent. 
Maximum:  4 students

$175 members/$220 non-members
   Fill your garden with glass art. Make a colorful hanging garden globe, a hot glass sculpted “guardian” on a pole and a garden jewel in this all-day workshop. Bring a wood or metal pole (3/4” copper or steel rod) to the class for your unique guardian sculpture.
