Our complete state-of-the-art hot shop for glass blowing offers classes for the beginner to the advanced glass artist. Classes are perfect for adults and teens looking for the excitement of learning a new skill or perfecting the craft.  For safety, please wear 100% cotton clothing, long pants and closed-toe shoes.  Located in Southwest Michigan, West Michigan Glass Art Center is the hotspot of fun things to do in Kalamazoo! Classes include all glass, supplies and tools.

An Evening with Hot Glass

Invite your friends to join you for an evening out and learn the basics of glassblowing at the furnace.  Swing out a hot glass bubble to make a vase, bowl or drinking glass here at West Michigan Glass Art Center.  This class can also be scheduled by appointment.



Glassblowing I

Designed for the beginning glassblower, this class with offer students instruction on the fundamentals of working and forming molten glass into basic shapes such as cups, bowls and vases.  Students will become familiar with traditional glassblowing equipment and movement in the hotshop.  This is the perfect class for adults and teens to get a taste for glass blowing and its endless possibilities.  Located in Kalamazoo, Michigan, we're the hotspot for fun things to do!



Glassblowing II

Prerequisite: Age 14 and up, Glassblowing I or equivalent.

     This class offers the next level of glassblowing and is designed to help students find a direction and goal in their designs.  Build on what you've learned in Glassblowing I and continue to refine your skills at the furnace.  Bring a sketchbook.


 

Intermediate Glassblowing

Tuesdays, 8 weeks, Feb.7-Mar. 27, 2-5 p.m. (HS1210)  No Longer Available
Prerequisite: Glassblowing I, II, Continuing Glassblowing or instructors approval.
Max: 4 students

This furnace glassblowing class concentrates on color techniques such as incalmo, cane work and roll-ups of canes and filigrana.  The focus is on simple yet strong classical shapes and footed vessels as a canvas to build color patterns and layers.




Advanced Glassblowing I

Tuesdays, 8 weeks, April 3-May 22, 2-5 p.m. (HS1211)
Prerequisite: Glassblowing I, II or Continuing Glassblowing and Intermediate Glass blowing. 
Maximum: 4 students
$450 members/$475 non-members
    The student should be ready to focus on two challenging projects.  Projects could be lampwork a scene onto a vessel, making detailed murrine canes and roll-up on a vessel, building segments of a hot glass sculpture in the annealing oven or cameo glass techniques on a vessel.  Students must have a plan and will create sketches of their ideas.



Independent Study in Glassblowing

Mondays, 8 weeks, Jan. 9-Feb. 27, 6-9 p.m. (HS1212)
Prerequisite: Glassblowing I, Continuing Glassblowing or equivalent.
Maximum: 4 students

$450 members/$475 non-members
     Continuing glassblowing students will focus on one or two designs.  Learn to design and work in a series.  Students will pick a project, (i.e., bowls or stemware) to repeat and refine your shapes and color techniques.  Sculpture techniques with hot glass bit work and use of the cold shop equipment will also be covered in this class.



One Day Hot Glass Sculpture Workshop

Prerequisite: Some previous glassblowing experience.

Maximum:  4 students

Students will explore glassblowing and take sculpting hot glass to the next level.  Students in this hot glass workshop will plan a project on paper and work out the logistics.  Then, using tools and traditional glassblowing teamwork and techniques, build their sculptures.

Explore the ancient art of glassblowing by gathering molten glass onto a blowpipe and learning how to use traditional glassblowing tools.  In this class for adults and teens, learn to make two projects:  A cup and a vase or a cup and a bowl.  Learn a great tradition right here in Southwest Michigan! 




Heart Paperweight Workshop

Learn the basics of gathering glass from the furnace and applying colors of your choice.  Make a beautiful solid hot glass heart paperweight.  Gather your friends and have an evening out sharing such a great experience.  These glass blown paperweights have such amazing depth of colors.
 

Millefiori Paperweights & Vessels

In the first class you will learn to build and pull millefiori cane.  The second and third class you'll use our millefiori to create a paperweight and a hollow vessel. 

Hot Glass Sculpted Flower Workshop

Mother's Day is around the corner and Spring is almost here, so come on over to West Michigan Glass Art Center and we'll make a sculpted colorful glass flower.  Learn how to use glassblower's tools to sculpt petals and leaves from hot glass.  This class can also be scheduled by appointment.

This focused glassblowing class for adults and teens will start with practicing and perfecting making a better shaped glass bowl and large votive candle holders.  It will lead up to making a hand-blown lamp base and matching lamp shade.  Cost includes lamp hardware.  Perfect class to continue to develop your glassblowing skills!

February is the month of love and long stem roses.  You will learn the basics of gathering and shaping molten glass from the furnace.  A beautiful red rose with a long green stem is the perfect lasting symbol of your affection.

Garden Globe Workshop

Using traditional glassblower’s tools and techniques, learn to gather at the furnace and blow a bubble.  You will make a colorful hanging hollow glass gazing globe for your garden or to hang on your porch.  This glassblowing class for adults and teens will spark your creative passion for glass.  So gather friends or family and try your hand at glassblowing!  West Michigan Glass Art Center is the hotspot for glass and fun in Kalamazoo!

In this new glassblowing class at West Michigan Glass Art Center you will learn to gather molten glass from the furnace, how to color, shape and sculpt it into solid glass fruits.  The colorful apples and pears created in this class can be beautifully displayed in a pretty bowl on your table or mantle year round.  This class is a wonderful introduction to glassblowing in our hotshop. 


Goblet Workshop

Thursdays, 4 weeks, Jan. 12 - Feb. 2, 6-9 p.m. (HS1231)
Prerequisite:  Glassblowing I and Continuing Glassblowing                    
Maximum:  4 students

This glassblowing class for adults and teens require intense team work at the furnace and use of the garage.  You will blow, shape and make attachments to build your goblets in the hotshop here at West Michigan Glass Art Center.  We will focus on cup shapes, avolios and blown feet components.  We are excited to work with you in this fun class right here in Kalamazoo!




Glassblowing Clinic

Refresh and review by appointment.

$55 per hour per person. Minimum two hours per person.  (HS1232)

One-on-one instruction. Let us know what techniques you want to review in the hot shop. A longer appointment may be necessary depending on the focus of the glass and/or technical problem that needs to be resolved.  Some review ideas: Goblets, handles and stems, color techniques, project consultation, annealing programs, and lampshades.  Please call us at 269-552-9802 to schedule your glassblowing clinic.

Hot Glass Paperweight
