Flameworking



   Minimize
Lampworking, also called Flameworking or Torch work,  is the ancient art of melting glass to form shapes.  It uses a gas (propane or natural gas) and oxygen torch to produce a flame hot enough to melt glass. Classes include all glass, supplies, tools and FUN!

Lampworking I (Flameworking)

 


Learn the nine essentials for working glass in the flame. Class for adults and teens at West Michigan Glass Art Center will focus on fundamentals of flame work as they apply to the creation of solid glass art items like round, flat or oval pendants, fish, turtles or frogs.  See classes listed below!

Fun things to do in Kalamazoo!

Intermediate Lampworking

Continue to build on previously learned fundamentals of borosilicate flameworking (or lampworking).  Learn control of flame characteristics (oxidizing, reducing, neutral) relating to lustering glass. Adults and teens in this glass class will explore encasement for stringers, simple latticino (twisties), and how to incorporate these techniques into solid work.  Simple hollow work will be demonstrated with an opportunity to play.




Flamework Tubing I

Prerequisite: Intermediate Lampworking

Maximum: 6 students

Discover how to manipulate borosilicate tubing at a stationary bench torch.  Adult and teen students will learn fundamental techniques including: pulling points, butt seals, T-seals, restrictions, blowing a bubble, popping holes, making proper attachments and basic color work.  After developing your skills, individuals can use class techniques to create hollow beads, perfume bottles, small jars, sculpture and more.  Check out this amazing class, right here in Kalamazoo!




Flameworked Knobs

Prerequisite: Basic flameworking skills
$55 members/$65 non-members
Maximum: 5 students

Use lampworking techniques to create unique, detailed knobs and drawer pulls for your cabinets, chest-of-drawers or closet.  This class for adults and teens will focus on construction of solid, practical designs using borosilicate glass that can easily be  translated to other popular types of flameworking glass. Students will learn to use the kiln as a garage and to work with large diameter mandrels.  Class will discuss cold working options to add an extra finishing touch.  West Michigan Glass Art Center staff will add finishing hardware up to four knobs created in this class. 




Flameworked Hearts and Tops

Manipulate borosilicate glass in this exciting class for adults and teens at West Michigan Glass Art Center.  Students will work at a stationary bench torch to sculpt and shape a working spinning top.  Give your sweetheart a really special gift as we also create unique and beautiful heart pendants. A variety of color applications will be covered along with plenty of working time to create multiple pieces.
